Best Practices For Black Mold Removal
The black mold removal issue - what is it all about? Let's take a look. There are certain species of mold organisms, which are seen as bad to clean up. The most heard about mold is Stachybotrys Chartarum, or more commonly referred to as, black mold. It’s one of the most dangerous in the fungi kingdom, but don’t get mistaken, there are other dangerous molds besides black mold. Mold growth in the home or business will become a toxic-health issue if given enough time. That’s not a question of if, but only of when. This is usually seen 24 hours after moisture is introduced to a cellulose product (gypsum board, carpet/padding, wall paper, insulation, paper based product, etc.) if not dried or removed.
Mold growth could also appear sooner when given the right environment. This is where time is of the essence in this battle! Studies have been completed proving this over and over again that a warm and moist environment is the main contributing factor for mold growth in the home or business, and along with a food source, which is a cellulose product. The bottom line is that if there is a mold issue in the home or business, the only subject left to task is how the mold problem will be handled. A great question to ask oneself is “Can this be something that can be handled by myself or does a certified mold remediation company need to be called in to complete the black mold removal issue?” This question, and any other that relates to black mold cleanup, should be answered expeditiously. In my professional opinion, I recommend that an Indoor Air Quality survey gets completed, prior to, and after the job is completed, by a certified, licensed, and insured Industrial Hygienist or Certified Mold Inspector. Prior to the start of the job, the Industrial Hygienist or Certified Mold Inspector will give you a report on how to “remedy” the affected area(s), write a “Scope of Work” to be completed by a certified/licensed mold remediation company who carries environmental insurance, and give you a “Clearance Report” after the job is completed. This "Clearance Report" should state that the affected area is now back to its normal condition, and that the mold levels are comparable to that of the outside environment. Pre-testing is not recommended if visible mold is seen. In order to initiate a smaller, black mold removal issue, one needs to know what is involved to do the job correctly. The larger mold issues need to be left to the experts and the smaller ones can be effectively managed, with research and caution. In what could appear to be a small mold remediation job, could turn into a “bigger then I expected mold remediation job”, due to the inexperience of identifying other issues that can arise. And for most of the time, you won’t have the correct mold remediation equipment and supplies to do the job correctly. As you start to cut and remove the walls/ceilings/floors, the backs of the gypsum board, carpet/padding, and/or floors are usually ten times worst then the front side. This is due to the warm, moist, and dark environment, where it suits a perfect breeding ground for black mold. Black mold is a very dangerous naturally occurring organism in the home and should not be touched, if the job is either too large, or the lack of know-how of the homeowner is not up to speed. Again, I highly recommend hiring a certified, licensed, and insured Industrial Hygienist or Certified Mold Inspector and a Certified/Licensed/Insured Mold Remediation Company who carries environmental insurance.
